Free at last...
Today's the day my fellow red, white and blue'ers. Today's the day when our long national nightmare comes to an end.
A Barack in the hand is worth exponentially more than two Bushes any day.
Michael Tomasky, American Editor of Guardian.co, had a great post yesterday on his blog. Here's the most poignant part, in my opinion:
"...let's put it this way: the American people did the right and logical thing last fall. They sized up 17 candidates, starting back in 2007, and at the end of the day, they elected the guy who seemed the most competent, the best motivated, and the one who was best for the historical moment. A huge part of that has to do with his unique ability to inspire optimism in people and make them think that things really can be different."
Here's the link to the full post.
There's also a link in Michael's post to a New York Times Poll which shows some truly staggering and very insightful numbers, most notably:
"Given a choice between stimulating the economy and protecting the environment, 58 percent of Americans said it was more important to stimulate the economy, compared with 33 percent who chose protecting the environment. In April 2007, 36 percent said it was more important to stimulate the economy, compared with 52 percent who chose the environment."
Here's the link to the full NY Times piece.
That my friends is a seismic shift in our collective priorities. It's as if we're saying "Yeah, the environment is important but... let's take care of our financial crises first."
It's going to be a great day... a GREAT day.
I for one am going to enjoy every minute of it.
Til next time.
